Getting to Essen

Are you going to Essen for the first time? No problem! The city is very easy to get to because it is located in the middle of a metropolitan region and is therefore connected to a diverse transportation network. Just choose the ride of your choice and get around.

by plane

The nearest airports under 100km are Düsseldorf (30km), Dortmund (45km), Cologne/Bonn (75km), Düsseldorf-Weeze (80km). From all airports there are connections via public transport to Essen.

by train

Essen’s main train station (Essen Hauptbahnhof) is only 850m away from the Socca Stadium and can be reached in 10 minutes by walk and 5 minutes by car. Countless long-distance and regional trains stop at this station at every day. The station is shown on display boards as “Essen Hbf“. You can find the timetable for national and regional trains at www.bahn.com.

by car

Essen is located in the heart of the Ruhr area and is therefore well connected in the middle of 600 kilometers of freeway, which is unique in Europe. The A40 runs directly through the city center. There is no toll for private vehicles on German roads.

by bus

The German company FlixBus connects cities all over the world and thus also leads to Essen. There are numerous connections within Germany and also in Europe, some of them even direct. The prices are usually very reasonable. The bus stops in Essen directly behind the main station. Information are available on www.flixbus.com in 40 languages.
